When Exale Brewing set out to breathe new life into one of Dalston’s most treasured landmarks, JR Rugs & Flooring were proud to play a key role in the transformation of the former F. Cooke’s Pie & Mash Shop into The Black Eel.
Originally opened in 1910 at 41 Kingsland High Street, F. Cooke’s quickly became legendary, not just for its traditional pie, mash, and eels, but for its extraordinary interior. Its lavish Art Deco tiles, ornate walls, and decorative features earned it the nickname “the Buckingham Palace of pie shops.”
These original front rooms are Grade II listed, preserving their beauty exactly as they were over a century ago.
As part of the renovation, these historic spaces remain untouched, still showcasing their stunning tiled floors, decorative walls, and unmistakable charm. JR Rugs & Flooring did not alter any part of this protected area, ensuring the heritage continues to shine as intended.
Beyond the listed frontage, the building opens into a series of newly designed spaces, forming a vibrant, multi-layered venue with bars, games areas, karaoke rooms, and lounge zones, all while still serving the classic pie and mash that built its reputation.
JR Rugs & Flooring were commissioned to install engineered oak flooring throughout these areas. We selected a finish that complements the building’s age and character, while providing the durability needed for a modern, high-footfall venue.
The result is a warm, seamless flow of natural wood that brings cohesion to the newly revived interior.
We also completed bespoke wood panelling around the building, adding depth, texture, and timeless craftsmanship that supports both the vintage and contemporary elements of the redesign.
Just as the project reached completion, an unexpected flood caused damage to sections of the new floor. With the grand opening less than 24 hours away, JR Rugs & Flooring immediately returned to the location, despite being a three-hour drive from our base, and repaired everything in time for opening night.
This fast turnaround, under pressure, demonstrates the commitment and reliability that define our work. We don’t just finish a job; we stand behind it.
Although based outside London, we regularly travel for specialist projects. The Black Eel is a prime example of how we support clients wherever our expertise is needed.
